Transliteration of Dhives Akuru scrolls into Thaana

Dhives Akuru (Maldivian Letters) is a historical script of the Maldives, primarily used before the widespread adoption of the modern Thaana script. Currently, many historical scrolls, royal decrees (faiykolhu), and official records remain untransliterated, rendering them inaccessible to the general public and modern scholars. This project aims to systematically digitize, transliterate, and archive a select collection of Dhives Akuru scrolls into the modern Thaana script, bridging a critical gap in Maldivian historiography.

Project Objectives

  • Preservation: To digitally preserve fragile historical scrolls before physical deterioration occurs.

  • Accessibility: To transliterate the ancient texts into modern Thaana, making the historical, legal, and cultural records readable for contemporary Maldivians.

  • Education & Research: To create an open-access digital database for historians, linguists, and students to study classical Maldivian administration and literature.
